Sandra Yi Sencindiver x LE MILE Magazine Cover Story: Editorial Fashion Photography in London

Inspired by the wood panelling, tiled geometry, textured carpets, and sleek finishing of a mid-century modern home, our cover story for LE MILE magazine brought together all my photography passions and pursuits.

Before making the move to becoming a Canadian photographer in London, much of my photography portfolio was shot on location. I loved location scouting: matching locations, environments, textures, and compositional elements to match subjects and their respective styling. Shooting in a new location for every project never ceased to make fashion photography exciting.

Much of my love for shooting on location comes from my drive for street photography: adapting to new environments, creativity with ambient lighting changes, accessibility, and creating work that feels grounded in reality.

When I moved to London, I was fortunate to open my own studio. This gave me the flexibility to try new lighting techniques and approaches for editorial fashion that I’ve always wanted to experiment with – but couldn’t afford the studio time to explore.

Having a studio space has given me a neutral environment for my personal branding shoots and other lifestyle photography (like dating) to make my subjects feel comfortable and at ease, resulting in refined and confident portraits.

In the studio, I wanted to tell stories through editorial fashion photography. Through my Broken Windows Theory editorial for 1883 Magazine, I dove headfirst into creative set design to tell my story. From there, I photographed Repurpose for Trend Privé magazine, where I went further into bold lighting and a focus on beauty.

While satisfied, creating a story out of nothing in a studio environment felt manufactured – bordering on artificial in some ways to me, though that’s very much the essence and beauty of the studio. I looked to bring in set design pieces and textures that abstractly emulated what I loved out on the street; however, I’ve come to love – and appreciate – that my background in street and lifestyle photography connects me with day-in-the-life storylines that harness unique environments, props, and expression.

After being inspired by the British seaside (namely, the Brighton Pier) and embracing my environmental portraiture roots, I put this energy into my Ode to British Summer editorial for Rakish Gent. The playful energy, colour, styling, and environment connected me back to merging street, fashion, and lifestyle photography for my editorials to come.

Soon after, LE MILE magazine reached out to commission the cover shoot with Alien: Earth actress Sandra Yi Sencindiver. Her enthusiasm and outgoingness, along with her thought-provoking interview answers, presented the opportunity to bring everything I’ve learned and loved about my photography direction in London.

The resulting visual story captures the street, lifestyle, and fashion-driven style I’m excited to further through my London tenure and with publications like LE MILE to come.
